Protecting Your Identity

Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the most prevelent, growing crimes. You can fight identity theft by monitoring and reviewing your credit report. At www.annualcreditreport.com, you can request a free credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.  AnnualCreditReport.com is the official site to help consumers to obtain their free credit report.  You may request your free credit report online, by phone or through the mail.

And if you think you may have been a victim of identity theft you have the right to ask that nationwide consumer credit reporting companies place "fraud alerts" in your file to alert potential creditors and others.  A fraud alert can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you.  It also may delay your ability to obtain credit. You may place a fraud alert in your file by calling just one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. As soon as that agency processes your fraud alert, it will notify the other two, which then also must place fraud alerts in your file.

Phishing

White Crown Federal Credit Union recognizes its responsibility to protect the privacy of its members’ nonpublic personal information.  In an effort to protect member information, the credit union has implemented several security procedures and policies to combat common e-mail and Internet fraud called “phishing.”

Phishing e-mails direct consumers to false “member service” websites or directly ask for a member’s personal information.  These scams contribute to a rise in identity theft, credit card fraud and other Internet-based fraud.

In order to prevent and mitigate the harm of a phishing attack, members should be aware that:

  • White Crown will not solicit confidential or sensitive member information, such as account numbers, passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs),  via e-mail, telephone or other communication methods.

  •  The Credit Union’s web page should not be accessed from a link provided by a third party.  It should only be accessed by typing a website name, or URL address, into the web browser or by using a “bookmark” that directs the web browser to the credit union’s website.

  • If a member suspects they are the targets of a phishing scam, or have provided personal financial information in response to a phishing scam, they should notify the credit union immediately by calling 303-534-4448 or e-mail info@whitecrown.org
